Nicky Forster undertook a Synapse 4 residency in 2009 with Willoh Weiland and Dr Chris Fluke (Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing, Swinburne University, VIC)

Swinburne’s Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing (CAS) continues its strong commitment to inter-disciplinary research, having previously hosted ANAT residencies in 2004 and 2007. In this project, Forster and Weiland resumed their successful partnership investigating issues in contemporary astronomy by drawing upon the research obsessions and cosmological programs resulting from the Centre’s involvement in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a new-generation radio telescope. For the duration of the residency the duo podcast a soap opera in instalments organised around the key project areas of the SKA, invigorating existing models of scientific outreach in the process.

Nicky Forster is a geographer, researcher, and occasional sound artist.
Her ongoing collaboration with Willoh S Weiland on 'Yelling at Stars' has expanded her interests from place into space, continuing in 2009 with their ANAT Synapse residency at Swinburne University's Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, with Dr Chris Fluke.
Her research interests otherwise span ideas of ambivalent belonging, locative medias, therapeutic landscapes, resource conflict, and most recently urban design, public art and acoustic ecology as researcher on the Urban Soundscapes project at SIAL Sound Studios, RMIT.
She also works with Ric McConaghy as sound designer for his adventure playgrounds, including Wombat Bend in Templestowe, and Bundoora Park.
